มีคนโทรมาที่วัด บอกว่าเพื่อนเพิ่งฆ่าตัวตาย และมีเพื่อนๆ กลุ่มนึงจะทำบุญหาเพื่อนคนนั้ เพื่อนกลุ่มนี้นับถือวัดที่นึงที่สอนว่า ถ้าคนฆ่าตัวตายและเพื่อนๆ ทำบุญให้ 3 วันติดๆ กัน เขาจะได้ไปสวรรค์ คนที่โทรมาบอกว่า มันค้านกับที่เขาเคยรู้มาว่า คนที่ฆ่าตัวตาย จะต้องมาเกิดและฆ่าตัวตายอีก 500 ชาติ ไม่มีทางว่าเพื่อนทำบุญให้แล้วจะได้ไปสวรรค์ได้ เขาบอกว่าเขาไม่เชื่อ แล้วมันทำให้เขาเป็นทุกข์เหลือเกิน
เขาก็เลยโทรมาหา แล้วถามหา พระอาจารย์ทูลด้วย ไม่ได้โทรมาหาแม่ แม่ก็เลยถามเขาว่า ทำไมเขาคิดว่าถ้าพระอาจารย์ทูนบอกว่า ใช่ ถ้าเพื่อนเธอทำบุญแบบนั้นแล้ว เพื่อนเธอจะได้ไปสวรรค์จริงๆ คุณจะเชื่อไหม
“ฉันไม่แน่ใจ อยากจะถามดู จะได้รู้ แล้วจะตัดสินใจอีกทีว่าจะเชื่อหรือไม่เชื่อ”
“ทำไมต้องเป็นพระอาจารย์ทูน”
“พระอาจารย์ทูนปฏิบัติไม่เหมือนกับสายอื่นที่เคยไปมา “
“ถ้าอย่างงั้น ถ้าคุณเชื่อใคร แล้วคนนั้นบอกว่าจริง คุณก็จะเชื่อว่าจริง อย่างนั้นเหรอ ถ้าคุณรักและนับถือใคร แล้วเขาบอกคุณจะเชื่อไหมว่ามันจริง แล้วสิ่งที่คุณเชื่อมาว่าฆ่าตัวตายแล้วเกิดมาอีก 500 ชาติ นี้ใครเป็นคนบอก คุณถึงเชื่อเอามากมาย”
“มันมีพูดอยู่ทั้วๆ ไป”
“ถ้าเรามีปัญญาของเราเองที่พอจะหาผิดหาถูกได้มันจะดีกว่าไหม แทนที่จะหาพึ่งหลวงพ่อ พึ่งใครๆ “
“เอาค่ะ”
“ลองคิดดูนะ ถ้าสมมุติว่า 500 ชาติมันจริง สมมุติว่าเพื่อนเราฆ่าตัวตายเป็นชาติแรก คุณคิดว่าเขาจะต้องเกิดมาฆ่าตัวตายอีก 499 ครั้งไหม”
“ใช่ค่ะ”
“แล้วถ้าชาตินี้เป็นชาติที่ 499 แล้ว เขาตายตอนนี้เป็นชาติที่ 500 เขาจบแล้ว คุณว่าเขาจะไปสวรรค์ได้ไหม “
“มันก็ต้องได้สิ จะไปไหนก็ได้ “
“คุณบอกได้ไหมว่าเพื่อนของคุณเขาฆ่าตัวตายมากี่ครั้งแล้ว นี้มันชาติที่เท่าไหร่แล้ว “
“บอกไม่ได้ “
“ฉะนั้นเราจะไปบ้าบอคอแตกโกรธคนนั้นว่าคนนี้ว่าเขาพูดผิดหรือพูดถูกทำไม เอาเป็นว่าตอนนี้คุณกำลังทุกข์อยู่ใช่ไหม สาเหตุมันมาจากไหน ก็ที่เราไม่รู้ว่าตายแล้วจะไปไหน ทำไมไม่แก้ทุกข์ของเราอย่างเดียว จะคอยไปแก้ความถูกผิดของคนอื่นมันจะได้ไหม แก้ได้ผล แก้ได้หมดไหม “
“เออ มันก็จริงเหมือนที่คุณว่านะ แล้วคุณเป็นใคร เป็นศิษหลวงพ่อทูลไหม “

Many years ago, I received a phone call at San Fran Dhammaram Temple. A girl was calling because her group of friends was going to make merit for their friend who had recently committed suicide. These friends of hers were members of a temple that taught them that, if you make merit for a friend who committed suicide, after three continuous days of merit making, your friend will go to heaven. The caller said that this teaching conflicted with what she had been told her entire life, that if you kill yourself you will be reborn in hell and be reborn to commit suicide for a total of 500 lifetimes. You would not go to heaven.
This girl was calling, asking for Luang Por Thoon to answer the question. He was not at the temple. I asked her, “If Luang Por Thoon replied that they were right, that your friend would go to heaven, would you believe him?”
“I’d think about it.”
“Why is it important for Luang Por Thoon to answer this question for you?”
“Because he practices differently from the other temple my friends go to. He is famous and credible.”
“If someone that you believe in tells you that something is true then you will believe it? So if you love and respect someone and that person tells you this conflicting theory is true, will you also believe it? Where did you learn of the 500 lifetimes that you believe it so deeply? Wouldn’t it be better if you had your own wisdom to discern what is true or false? It would be better if you didn’t have to rely on others.”
“I see your point.”
“Suppose this notion of 500 lifetimes ending in suicide is true. If this friend of yours killed themselves for the first time, they will have to go to hell and be reborn 499 more times. But what if they had already committed suicide 499 times and this was the 500th and final time. Could they possibly go to heaven?”
“Yes. I suppose they could go anywhere.”
“And do you know how many times your friend has committed suicide?”
“No.”
“You are getting angry at people and going crazy trying to label this teaching as right, that teaching as wrong. You’re suffering now, right? What’s the cause? It is that you don’t know what happens after death. Isn’t it better to fix the your own problem, the one that is causing you to suffer? After all, is it possible to fix other people’s viewpoints? There is no way you will be 100% successful at it.”
“I guess you’re right. Who are you? Are you a student of Luang Por Thoon?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’ll believe you.”

Extra tidbit:
You don’t even know if the 500 lifetimes is true. People who commit suicide do so because they believe they can escape problems by physically dying from them. But this perception is not true. As long as people hold that wrong perception, they will continue to kill themselves. If you can fix that wrong perception by realizing what the truth is, you might be able to stop after 10 or even 2 suicides.
You can ask yourself, would you be someone who would commit suicide, or do you believe in escaping your problems by turning the other way or running? If you’ve done that in the past, did it really fix the problem? What other, better ways are there to truly fix problems? This is a point that is more important than whether it is truly 500 lifetimes or whether making merit for 3 days can really get your friend to heaven. These are all things that you cannot know or prove with certainty. But what you can prove is your own personal results
